Arusha (Day 13: May 31)

This morning was a chance to sleep in after several early mornings in homestay! Breakfast ran from 7:30-9:00, but because checkout wasn’t until 12:00, we were able to hang out as a group by the pool before packing up to leave. We headed to a nearby mall, where we bought snacks and presents for our homestay families as well as souvenirs to take home. After spending some time shopping, we boarded the bus to head back to the hotel. We finished eating lunch and enjoyed our time together before heading back to the homestays at 3:00. During the 3 hour bus ride from Arusha, we played games and listened to music (thanks to Mr. Mitchell’s phone).  After a warm welcome back from our families, we had dinner with neighbors and discussed our experiences yesterday during the safari!

Today was our Pre-Trip Orientation: a chance to bond, connect, ask questions, and get excited for Tanzania! We began by hearing from Mr. Brown, Ms. Bustamante, and Ms. Marks, who helped us think through several important questions: What are the trip’s purposes and goals? What are the expectations for student engagement and behavior? What health precautions should we keep in mind while we are there? From there, we moved into some fun “get to know each other” activities. In pairs, students performed a Disney song that best expressed how they were feeling about going to Tanzania. Then, in groups of four, students researched and shared information about Tanzania’s geography and environment, history and political system, and social, cultural, and religious makeup.
